Marketing for beginners

By Natasha | May 9, 2007

What is marketing?

There are so many definitions of marketing and they go beyond what the average person thinks.  Marketing goes beyond selling.

Here are a few definitions I have come across:

Marketing ….

…. is what we do to create, expand and maintain a collection of customers profitably

…. is the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organisational objectives

…is the management process of anticipating, identifying and satisfying customer requirements profitably. Operative marketing involves the processes of market research, market segmentation, new product development, product life cycle management, pricing, channel management as well as promotion (Chartered Institute of Marketing).

No matter how big or small your business, the process of marketing is a tool that should be included in your toolbox.
